The consequences of specifying, procuring or installing non-compliant products can be severe.
The Facts
– Galvanised carbon steel WILL fail in facing brickwork. Galvanising is simply a sacrificial zinc coating. Once consumed or damaged, the underlying carbon steel corrodes. In exposed masonry, evidence from the industry has shown deterioration can become apparent within just a few years.
– Galvanised movement ties do not comply with the durability expectations of modern masonry construction. The UK’s principal masonry guidance, PD 6697, together with BS EN 845-1 and Approved Document A, establishes the durability requirements expected for masonry components. Stainless steel is the recognised solution for external facing brickwork.
– Warranty providers expect a minimum 60-year design life. NHBC and other leading warranty providers require masonry components to meet long-term durability expectations. Galvanised carbon steel movement ties cannot satisfy those expectations in exposed brickwork and may result in the façade being rejected or remedial works being required.
– The responsibility rests with those who specify, procure and install them. Choosing a cheaper, non-compliant alternative does not transfer liability. Designers, buyers, contractors and installers could all find themselves responsible for the consequences of product failure and non-compliance.
Why Stainless Steel?
Unlike galvanised carbon steel, 304 stainless steel does not rely on a surface coating for corrosion protection. Its corrosion resistance is inherent within the material itself, allowing it to continue performing throughout the life of the masonry façade.
Whilst stainless steel movement ties are commonly referenced as having a 60-year design life, this is simply the minimum durability expected by UK warranty providers—not the limit of the product’s service life. Properly specified stainless steel movement ties should continue to perform for the lifetime of the brickwork façade.
